FAQ – Dolomites Via Ferrata, Rock Climbing and Ski Safari with Mountain Guide Roberto Iacopelli

Here you’ll find clear answers to the most common questions about my customised via ferrata, rock climbing and ski safari programs in the Dolomites.

If you don’t find your question here, just send me an email and I’ll be happy to help.

🔹 Section 1 – General Questions

Q1. Who is the guide of these programs?

All programs are organised and guided by Roberto Iacopelli, UIAGM/IFMGA certified mountain guide based in Bolzano, in the heart of the Dolomites. I have over 40 years of experience in via ferrata, rock climbing, trekking and ski touring in these mountains.

Q2. Are the programs private or in groups?

All programs are private and customised. This means that I guide only you (and your family or friends), without mixing different people in the same group.

Q3. How many days should I plan for my holiday?

It depends on your time and budget. Most guests choose 3–6 days, but I can organise from 1 single day up to 10 days or more for hut-to-hut programs.

🔹 Section 2 – Via Ferrata Dolomites

Q4. Do I need previous via ferrata experience?

No. Many guests are complete beginners. The itinerary is adapted to your level and we start with easier routes to learn the basic techniques in total safety.

Q5. What is the best season for via ferrata?

The via ferrata season usually runs from mid-June to early October. July, August and September are the most reliable months, but I will always check the conditions and weather forecast before each day.

Q6. What level of fitness do I need for a via ferrata trekking?

You should be able to walk for 5–7 hours per day on mountain paths, with some uphill and downhill. If you are used to regular hiking, you are probably ready for an easy via ferrata program.

Q7. Can families with children join via ferrata programs?

Yes, families are very welcome. For safety reasons, I usually accept children from 12 years old, motivated and already used to hiking.

🔹 Section 3 – Rock Climbing Dolomites

Q8. I only climb indoor. Can I join a rock climbing program?

Absolutely yes. Many climbers come from indoor climbing gyms. We start on well-protected single-pitch routes to adapt your gym skills to real rock, and then we can move to multi-pitch routes if you wish.

Q9. What is the minimum climbing level required?

For most programs, a leading level around 5b/5c (French) in the gym is enough to start. If you are a complete beginner, I can organise a rock climbing introductory course.

Q10. Do I need my own climbing gear?

If you have your own shoes and harness, it’s perfect. If not, I can provide all technical equipment: rope, belay device, quickdraws, helmet and harness.

🔹 Section 4 – Ski Safari Dolomites

Q11. What is a Ski Safari in the Dolomites?

A Ski Safari is a multi-day ski trip where we change ski areas every day, using lifts and panoramic traverses to explore different valleys of the Dolomiti Superski area, always skiing with a light backpack and sleeping in hotels or mountain huts.

Q12. What level of skier do I need to be?

You should be at least a solid red-slope skier (confident on red runs, able to control your speed on black runs). Off-piste is optional and only if conditions and level are suitable.

Q13. When is the best period for a ski safari?

From late December to the end of March. January and March are often the best months for snow conditions and fewer crowds.

🔹 Section 5 – Logistics, Accommodation and Booking

Q14. Where is the best place to stay?

I strongly recommend staying in Bolzano, which is the most strategic town in the Dolomites. From there we can reach the main via ferrata, climbing and ski areas each day by car.

Q15. Do you organise accommodation and transfers?

Yes. I can help you choose and book hotels or huts, and I can organise transfers between Bolzano and the starting points of the activities. Just tell me your travel dates and preferred comfort level.

Q16. How far in advance should I book?

For July, August, and the main ski weeks, it is better to contact me several months in advance, especially if you want hut-to-hut programs. For other periods, 4–6 weeks in advance is usually enough.

Q17. How do I request a customised program or a quote?

Just send me an email with:

  • your preferred dates

  • number of days

  • type of activity (via ferrata, climbing, trekking, ski safari)

  • number of people and their experience

I will answer personally with one or more tailor-made proposals.
